Adjustable Speed Drive System Acceptance Test

What it is

The adjustable speed drive system acceptance test is a comprehensive electrical and operational evaluation of a variable-frequency drive (VFD), soft starter, or other speed-control apparatus and its associated motor and control wiring before the system is energized into service. NETA ATS-2025 7.17 outlines the test scope: it includes verification of the drive's nameplate and nameplate-derived parameters (manufacturer, model, phase configuration, and output and input current ratings), confirmation that remote start/stop and speed-control signals operate as designed, and documentation of the test instruments used. The test is performed on one-, three-, or other phase configurations, at the equipment's nominal input voltage and frequency.

Why it is performed

An adjustable speed drive system integrates power electronics, motor windings, and often custom signal wiring into a single subsystem whose interaction with the plant's supply and the downstream motor must be correct for the system to start safely and operate as commissioned. Miswired control signals, an incorrectly rated or misconfigured drive, or a motor winding defect that escaped earlier inspection can all be caught during an acceptance run before the system is put into production. Testing before energization confirms that the drive's protective functions and speed-control inputs respond as the control drawings and sequence call for, and that the measured currents on input and output align with the nameplate or the power-study estimates.

When it is performed

Acceptance: performed once, before a new or reconditioned adjustable speed drive system is first energized, as part of the standard electrical test sequence for the drive and motor subsystem. The test is typically run after insulation resistance and winding resistance tests on the motor, and after verification of the drive's input power, control signal wiring, and mechanical coupling but before the system is connected to production load.

How it is typically performed

With the drive and motor de-energized, isolated, and grounded per the site's safety lockout procedures, the test begins with identification data capture: manufacturer, model or catalog number, phase configuration, equipment tag, and the nameplate input and output current ratings. The drive is then energized from a source matching its input voltage and frequency specifications, and the tester verifies that the control inputs - remote start/stop buttons or signals, speed potentiometer, digital speed command lines, or other control logic - respond as the schematic and sequence require. Measured input current and output current are recorded during a representative operating point or a series of points across the drive's load range. A multimeter, clamp meter, or equivalent instrument captures the electrical parameters, and the tester documents the make, model, serial number, and calibration due date of the test equipment used.

What gets recorded

Drive nameplate identification: manufacturer, model or catalog number, phase configuration, equipment designation or tag, and the nameplate input current and output current ratings. Measured input current and output current at one or more operating points, ambient temperature, and the model, serial number, and calibration due date of the test instrument(s) used. Notes confirming that remote start/stop and speed-control signal operation matched the control drawings and sequence.

How results are evaluated

NETA ATS-2025 7.17 does not prescribe a single universal tolerance for adjustable speed drive acceptance, but rather requires verification that the drive and its associated control and motor subsystem operate as the commission documents, schematic, and sequence specify. Measured input and output currents should be consistent with the drive's and motor's nameplate ratings and the design power study; a measured current significantly below or above the expected range calls for investigation of the load, signal wiring, or drive settings before the system is left in service. Remote start/stop and speed-control signal operation must match the schematic exactly.
